key terminology chapulín (SP) = noun. grasshopper (something that is constantly jumping from one thing to another) chela (SP) = noun. beer (Mex) podging (EN) = noun. to have sex (Br. regional) (vulgar) prologue Dear Lauren, Here I am, sitting in Business Class Mexicana flight 183 with destination Guadalajara, writing to you. I’m almost there. My arrival, however, is a day later than planned. What this means of course is that we have one day less to fulfil Nicky’s audaciously-planned itinerary: we now have not even two weeks to get from Guzman to the border, and back. I hope that he managed to pick up my message. Everything started ok: I woke up stupidly early yesterday morning to get to Liverpool airport, and had a nice chat with my dad in the car. However, being tired, I was in a bad mood waiting the check-in queue. I blame the other people in it. Americans are fucking idiots. Also they are fat, even the ones who you don’t think look that fat really are. Case in point the man standing in front of me, I should have got a picture he looked quite normal but had the biggest ass (to use the Americanism) I have ever seen. Boarded the plane; the journey involved taking sleeping pills and wondering at how bigger twats my fellow passengers were. For example some people were flying from England to get married in Las Vegas. Haven’t they missed the point? If/when I get married in Vegas no way its going to be a planned thing and I want to regret it in the morning! Well, anyway, after 10 hours we finally landed in Chicago, where we had to wait for more than an hour to be let in. I don’t even want to be here, I’m going to miss my flight, would you please let me leave your silly country! The security guy didn’t believe I was a student so asked me which university I went to and what I was studying. Angry, angry man. But he had a gun and I didn’t want to get shot so I answered politely like a good boy and smiled. I had to sprint through the airport with my non-terrorist bags to another check-in desk, where I was greeted by the news that there was a problem. It turned out that there were hurricanes and tornadoes (!?) in Texas, directly in the way of the flight’s proposed route. Great! Is there no other way to get to Guadalajara?? Well, I suppose I could fly *round* the hurricanes and tornadoes…but the only plane is leaving in two minutes and I probably won’t be able to make it. I didn’t make it. There is a flight tomorrow, GREAT – so what am I going to do until then? A discounted hotel rate – WOW – I don’t have to pay your full rate how kind are you, even though this is ALL YOUR FAULT!!! After a while the anger did pass and I realized that it would be pretty cool to be able to spend a night in Chicago. At tourist information a man asked me how I was, to which I replied: “Things are going wrong but it could be worse so I’m happy”. He then told me a story about an orphan who is putting herself through college on that motto. Very interesting man. I waited ages for the bus to my hotel, which was fucking miles away. There was a girl on the bus, we loosely made plans to go into the centre of Chicago but then both made excuses not to go. I went anyway, on a double-decker train which was BITCHING there really isn’t any other word for it. In fact it was so BITCHING I am going to say it again. BITCHING!!!!! That’s better. If you ever want to feel small, try walking around Chicago. The whole city is just skyscrapers, all made out of really dark glass. I walked for about three hours through the downtown area; it was breathtaking. Did a lot of thinking. One of the best things I decided upon was that it would be amazing to have sex on the top floor of one of those buildings. Possibly add a bit of cocaine and you would really feel on top of the world. Note to self: I really should try cocaine some day, preferably whilst having sex on the top floor of a skyscraper. 5 o’clock alarm, shower, bus, airport, train, terminal, shit no bag, ring hotel, it was on bus, the guy doesn’t seem helpful, I need to ring back in 15 minutes. Go to check-in and start queuing. 15 minutes pass but I’m still in the queue, decide that I will need to check in first or when will I be able to? Stress. Ask the family in-front of me if I can use their ‘cell’, they say yes. I love them. Ring the hotel they say I need to be in front of Terminal 3 in 20 minutes. Am I going to get checked-in in time? Nice family let me go ahead of them. Checked in, upgraded to business class even, but only have 10 minutes to spare to meet the guy to get my bag back. Run, train, run…made it. It’s 1 minute to 9. 5 past no bus, 10 past no bus, quarter past no bus. Really, really scared: no-one will let me use their phones and I can’t look for a payphone in case the bus arrives. 20 past see the name of the hotel, this could be it! It wasn’t. 25 past no, half past no. 31 past-is it? – yes, finally, the bus is here, wave frantically at the driver, he gives me the bag, I tip him then run, run, run through passport control and into my business class seat where they bring me drinks! Phew…this is the life : ) We haven’t even set off on our road trip and I’ve already nearly had a heart attack. On the bright side, I’ll soon be on the plane to Guadalajara, and Mexico! And there will be Mexican stewardesses…Business Class Mexican stewardesses. Today is going be a good day. Hope your travels are going well. Write back, yeah? Love you muchísimo!!! No llegué a tiempo. Vas a contestarme, ¿verdad? ¡Love you muchísimo! Jamie día 1: |
